Growing up I absolutely adored my grandmother. I couldn’t wait until mom and dad said that we’d be going for a visit. I was captivated by her heavy french accent that was barely comprehensible. I smiled when i saw that mischievous twinkle in her eye. Playing dress up with her fancy jewelry and sparkly outfits was one of my favorite things to do. I also remember my grandmother crocheting.
I Think back to those childhood memories overwhelmed with love and appreciation. Thinking of staying overnight with her
and watching the local news while she crocheted after dinner. Sitting on a wooden framed sofa with plastic covered cushions. Always overly cautious not to upset the fancy candy dish on the glass coffee table. The smell of fresh baked yeasty rolls in the air.
She seemed to churn out the afghans, slippers and hats like a Chinese clothing factory! I’ve always wondered how she produced so many things. Especially now that i have taken to crochet myself. Amidst the blankets and mittens, she found the time to crochet outfits for my Barbie Dolls that would rival Gucci 🙂 She made skirts, dresses, boots, purses, headbands….the works! Complete matching outfits from head to toe, these dolls were dressed to the nine! Barbie fashion at it’s finest.
As we sit here today and i write these fond memories full of warmth and love,
Gram sits in a nursing home a couple towns over. 88 years old this week. Healthy as an Ox…. And happy as a clam. After all these years, her body is not what failed her. It was her mind. It was Alzheimers.
She is certain that her father is building her a gazebo for her friends and her to dance. Her “girls” traveling an endless journey in time as Gram patiently waits. They seem to always be on their way to pick her up….to go dancing.
These days she speaks more French her native language, than english. Carrying on cheerfully, and swaddling her own doll now, As she happily regresses back into her inner child once known. I Still have those dolls dressed in their fancy clothes, vacuum sealed for preservation, tucked away in a safe place. Those dolls are one of the most treasured items that I have ever had the privilege to possess. Smiling and Thinking of what outfit I will crochet for Grams Doll, in the back of my mind I hope that i have my dolls too when my mind fades.
